Why let cavities rob you of your beautiful smile?  We all hate the pain and the unsightly look of a cavity!  Don’t let the evil bacteria eat away at your teeth by transforming sugars into acid and making part of your tooth soft and rotten and eventually causing the decayed area to break down.

Individuals of any age can develop tooth decay if their oral health is poor.  People who have a higher risk are those who already have cavities and individuals with decreased saliva flow because saliva buffers the acid in the mouth and helps to prevent the tooth decay from occurring.  Children also have a higher risk of tooth decay because they tend to consume more sugars and sometimes even avoid brushing their teeth!

Thank goodness for Fantastic Fluoride!  Fluoride is a natural compound found in soil, water, and various kinds of foods.  It plays a very essential role in the health of your mouth.  Fluoride protects the enamel of your teeth from decay.   By combining with the tooth enamel it makes the enamel of your teeth more resistant against the harmful effects of acid on your teeth.  This in turn, slows down the decaying process of your teeth or even stopping it completely!

Fluoride comes in various forms that can be used independently such as in toothpaste, rinses, lozenges, chewable tablets and drops.  Gels, varnishes or foams can be directly applied to the surface of your teeth by a Dental Hygienist.  Fluoride can even be found in our tap water!  This is called Water Fluoridation.  Fluoride is added to tap water to protect everyone in the community from the possibility of tooth decay.  This is a safe and effective way of preventing tooth decay at a low cost.  The fascinating work of Fluoride is invisible to the naked eye but is packed with action!

Fluoride is an extraordinary substance, but it cannot perform miracles on its own!  Help Fluoride fight cavities by brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing and reduce the amount you consume sugary foods and drinks.  And of course you can’t forget about visiting your neighbourhood friendly Dentist and Hygienist to have your teeth checked and cleaned regularly.

*Chewing sugar-free gum for 10 minutes after meals can also help to prevent tooth decay!  Chewing gum makes your mouth produce more saliva, which in turn cancels out the acid produced in your mouth after drinking and eating.
