Posts Under Whitening

Teeth naturally darken with age though; surface stains can also be caused by foods and beverages we consume as well as tooth trauma and smoking.  There are many available whitening options including in-office, at home and over the counter treatment.  However, in-office whitening is a far more popular option due to the instant whitening, level of effectiveness, and the comfort of not needing to continuously wear bleaching trays or strips.

Why should I have my teeth whitened at the Dental Office?

Only your dentist or hygienist can get your teeth their absolute whitest in the shortest amount of time.  Non professional teeth whitening products: whitening strips, toothpaste, and rinses are only minimally effective in removing minor surface stains, but for a deeper, long lasting whitening treatment you should consult with your dentist.

Is teeth whitening safe?

YES!  Whitening with approved hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide products has been proven safe by extensive research conducted by top Universities and respected industry professionals.  In addition, whitening agents such as FAST&MILD does not need high-intensity, high-heat UV lamps which can damage the soft tissues inside your mouth and vulnerable interior of your teeth.

How long do the results last?

Teeth that have been professionally whitened will always appear lighter than they were before the treatment.  Results are dependent on many factors such as tooth structure, personal habits, physical health and oral hygiene.

What are some potential problems?

Tooth sensitivity is typically associated with the amount of time the hydrogen peroxide gel is in contact with the teeth as well as personal predisposition to sensitivity.  Current whitening procedures take half the time of other systems and results in little to no sensitivity.  It is however common for teeth to be sensitive 24 hours following teeth whitening procedures.  However, if your teeth are normally sensitive, whitening may make your teeth more sensitive for an extended period of time.  Patients typically describe this sensitivity as a momentary tingling or stinging sensation.  You may take mild analgesic such as Tylenol of Advil to make you more comfortable until your teeth sensitivity returns to normal.

Gum irritation is the result of a small amount of solution leaking under the gum protection.  A burning sensation on your gums may also occur.  This should resolved by itself between a few minutes to a few days.

Will all my teeth be the same colour?

Just anyone is a candidate for teeth whitening.  However people with dark yellow-brown teeth tend to whiten better than people with gray or bluish-gray teeth.  Multi-coloured teeth, especially if due to tetracycline, do not whiten very well.  Tooth- coloured fillings, veneers, bridges and partial dentures will not whiten.  If the filling matches your current colour, whitening will result in miss-matched shades with your natural teeth.  You may need to have your old filling replaced to match your newly whitened teeth.

How do I maintain my professionally whitened smile?

Simple! Good oral hygiene is always a key factor, but to help keep your teeth their whitest, an amazing maintenance product called LifeSmile is a 15% carbamide peroxide teeth brightening pen.  Touch up your teeth on the go wherever and whenever you want!

Avoid foods and beverages that could stain, such as:

  • Coffee/Tea
  • Tobacco Products
  • Mustard/Ketchup
  • Cola
  • Red Wine
  • Soy Sauce
  • Berry Pies
  • Red Sauces

To maximize your whitening procedure, maintain healthy oral hygiene by brushing, flossing and booking regular dental cleanings.  This will leave your teeth looking cleaner and brighter.  A brighter smile gives your confidence a boost and when we feel good, we look good! Experience the Difference.

It’s apparent that celebrities in movies and on television have amazing smiles.  Not many people get perfect teeth naturally.  Since it’s a very visible part of your face, it’s understandable that you would want it to look as attractive as possible.   What most people don’t know is that these days, it’s not hard to get yourself a smile that we call Hollywood-like.  There are numerous treatments at your disposal at your friendly dental office.  You can have chips and gaps filled, stains removed, teeth straightened and missing teeth replaced.  Cosmetic dentistry doesn’t have to be an unreachable fantasy that only celebrities have access to.  Rejuvenating your smile can improve the look of your whole face and give you the confidence to show off your smile.

However, Prevention and proper Maintenance is always better and easier than facing the consequences of poor oral health! Again, most people are not born with perfect teeth and just like maintaining the rest of your body by exercising and eating healthy, your oral health is accountable to your hygiene and eating habits.  You should know that your teeth can become tainted from smoking, drinking coffee, tea, red wine or cola.  Avoiding drinking these drinks in excess can prevent further staining of your teeth.  The best way to achieve a healthy and beautiful smile is to brush and floss properly every day.  Food particles can accumulate on teeth and over time, turn into plaque and further hardening to tartar.  The bacteria that results from this accumulation from failure to maintain good oral health can lead to gum disease, bad breath, tooth decay and even the loss of your teeth.  A dental hygienist can remove plaque and tartar that cannot be easily removed by brushing or flossing.  To avoid these problems it is essential to visit the dentist at least twice each year.  Doing this allows the dental team to provide consistent care, identify and address any potential problems at an early stage to protect you from more serious problems later.  Despite the latest technology where teeth can look and feel real, preventing the loss of your own teeth is still the best option.  A healthy smile gives your confidence a boost and when we feel good, we look good!

A family practice like ours is your first defense against serious dental problems.  Over the past 14 years our patients have embraced our practice and their support has made us strong.  We return their confidence by striving for excellence in quality care by our friendly and gentle dental team using the very best and latest technological tools.  Call Dentistry @ Equinox to book an appointment for you and your family.  Experience the Difference.
